Stoned

Many cultures believe in the mystical powers and energies of various semi-precious and precious gems and stones.  Like astrology, it's fascinating to me, but I'm not sure how much credence to put to it. Anything's possible! It's fun and interesting at any rate.  Here is a little general info about various stones and gems and their attributes.

Quartz crystal:  This stone is considered to be an 'all purpose' stone with healing and protection powers.  It's said to amplify the powers of other stones and can unblock energies and enhance psychic ability.  Quartz crystals can be completely transparent, semi-transparent, or even milky with various inclusions.  Quartz crystals can be in various forms--single stones, clusters or points.  It's said the more milky stones are 'female' crystals while the more clear ones are 'male'.  If a crystal point has 5 sides or edges surrounding the sloping face of the point, it's called an 'Isis' crystal and is considered 'feminine' or 'female'.  'Channeling' crystals have 7 sides surrounding the sloping face of the point.  Eight sides make the point a 'grounding' crystal.
Crystals that have a point on each end are 'double-terminated'.  It's purported that energy flows from both ends of these crystals.  There are many other types of crystal point forms and meanings and numerous websites devoted to this belief.

The Love Stone is.....Emerald!  You might have thought a pretty red Ruby would be the stone of love, like I did.   Emeralds are the stones of cooperation, marriage and family and a lifelong love.

Garnet is the stone of balance.  It 'senses' where the person wearing it is out of balance and will bring things to an even keel internally.  It's the stone of business success and the protector of homes.  Love the deep, rich wine red of garnet.

Iolite brings inner vision.  It is the best stone for use while meditating.  Iolite is a pretty lavendar blue and sometimes is confused with tanzanite.

A soft green Jade brings serenity and is the stone of gardening and the earth.  It's also considered a love stone like the emerald.  It's thought to bring wisdom and protection.  Jade appears in many other colors, too.

My favorite stone is Labradorite.  It is said to block negatives, enhance spirituality and is a stone of transformation.  Is said to be very powerful.  All I know is that I love this beautiful chatoyant gemstone.  In the raw state, it's not very impressive.  But cut and polished, magic comes out in the beautiful blue, green or gold flashes it holds within its heart.

Beautiful blue Lapis Lazuli is another very spiritual stone.  It enhances friendship and romantic relationships.

Pyrite helps willpower and will help you stay strong when trying to develop good habits.  It helps maintain focus while meditating or trying to study.  Fool's Gold is what we called it growing up.

Carnelian helps increase energy and brings success to business and abundance into the home.  Love the soft orangey red of this stone.

Golden yellow Citrine is a stone of prosperity and attracts success and $$$$$$$!  I'm glad since I'm currently working on a necklace design using a citrine cluster and some nuggets.  Maybe it will rub off on me before I sell it!

Rose Quartz is another stone of love and an enhancer of beauty.  An extremely ethereal translucent pink; very feminine.

Aha!  I was right!  Ruby IS a stone of love.  It's said to magnify passion and bring self-confidence as well.

Tiger's Eye protects you from harm and danger.  It increases insight and self-confidence, too.  There is blue tiger's eye as well as the more common brown.

Topaz is another stone of focus.  It also protects against insanity and jealousy. Topaz is found in various colors.

The stone of friendship is Turquoise.  It brings serenity as well.  Be aware that genuine solid turquoise is becoming rare.  A good sized untreated turquoise stone can be very, very expensive these days.  Most turquoise jewelry seen today is 'reconstituted' or 'stabilized'.  Reconstituted/stabilized turquoise is small pieces/chips of the stone that have been pressed together and the spaces between are filled with an epoxy or resin into a sort of 'cake'.  This process allows the treated stone to be cut into beads, cabochons or other gem forms for jewelry making.  Sometimes dye is used to enhance the color.

Just as there are thousands more types of stones not talked about here, there is much, much more to the metaphysical study of the meaning of gemstones; this is just a taste.  There are some wonderful sites that go into so much more depth than this post and I encourage you to check them out!

Till next time,

The best part of life is not just surviving, but thriving with passion and compassion and humor and style and generosity and kindness.
